International Trade Updates

Virginia Economic Development Partnership provides quarterly updates on international trade policy changes that are impacting Virginia businesses. Topics to note this quarter include:

The U.S. is negotiating new trade initiatives, one with a group of countries in Asia and Oceania and a second initiative with Western Hemisphere nations. These initiatives include several of Virginia’s top trade partners, including Canada, Mexico, and Japan.
A U.S. Federal Circuit appeals court upheld a White House decision to extend Section 232 tariffs to steel derivatives, and some U.S. importers are calling on the Biden administration to reimpose Section 232 tariffs on Mexican steel.
India announced it would end duty-free imports of soybean oil, which could impact U.S. exports of soybeans, a top Virginia export.

Congratulations to Performance Food Group for moving up in the annual Fortune's 500 list! For the third year running, West Creek based Performance Food Group led the pack of local companies named to the Fortune 500 list.

Performance Food Group was founded in 1885 in Richmond, Virginia by a food peddler. It is now headquartered in Goochland and distributes a range of food products.

Performance Food Group was the highest ranked of the eight Richmond-area firms to land on the coveted Forbes list. Performance Food Group nabbed the 91st spot on the overall list, and also was the only local company to break into the Fortune 100 strata in the latest rankings.

Virginia Cooperative Extension Needs Your Input!

Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) is the local connection to Virginia’s land grant universities, Virginia Tech and Virginia State. Extension is charged with bringing unbiased, research-based information to the public in the areas of agriculture, natural resources, horticulture, 4-H youth development, family and consumer sciences, and community viability. This is done via a variety of programs conducted in cooperation with local governments and other stakeholders—hence the “Cooperative” in Virginia Cooperative Extension. To this end, VCE conducts a situation analysis every five years to identify emerging needs. This community input helps us direct our priorities and programs as an office.
